The rider pairs who travelled from the Netherlands through Germany to Switzerland on horseback are not only bringing a symbolic message of greeting from the previous World Championship host, Oirschot (NL), but also carrying with them the spirit of community and love for horses that defines the Icelandic Horse World Championships.
The idea of the relay ride dates back to the 1980s. It brings together many enthusiastic Icelandic horse riders who complete a set number of stages (up to five in total). The relay began on 16 June 2025 in Oirschot and will have covered over 850 km by the time it reaches Birmenstorf on 3 August 2025.
The handover of the baton to the Swiss rider pairs marks an emotional highlight and perfectly embodies our motto: Bringing people together in their passion for the Icelandic horse.
This is also a meaningful moment for Roman Spieler, President of the Organising Committee of the 2025 Icelandic Horse World Championships: «The baton handover is much more than a symbolic act – it is an expression of our shared passion for the Icelandic horse and a sign of international unity within the riding community. We are very proud to host the 2025 World Championships in Birmenstorf and to mark the occasion with this festive welcome.»
The ceremonial handover was also attended by Marianne Stänz, Mayor of Birmenstorf, and the entire organising committee of the 2025 World Championships. For Marianne Stänz, this is no ordinary event either: «This Icelandic Horse World Championship is a once-in-a-century event for us. We are incredibly proud to welcome you all to our community.»
