Countdown to the World Championships 2015 in Herning

June 27 2015 | Leisure Riding, World Championships

It is an old tradition of the World Championships for Icelandic Horses to ride a relay ride from the most recent World Championships host country to the current World Championships host country.
On Sunday, June 21 this special baton started its journey to Herning and the World Championships 2015. Four German Icelandic horse riders were handed over the baton from the German Icelandic Horses Association at Brandenburger Tor in the center of Berlin, which hosted the World Championships 2013. After a small ceremony the riders took on the first stage of the 610-kilometre journey towards Denmark and Herning.
The riders are travelling somewhere between 25 and 35km a day and each morning the team entrusts the baton to a team of new riders, who are ready to take it with them on the next stage.
The baton will cross the border between Germany and Denmark on July 26.
The relay race has always been a greeting from leisure riders to the professional riders and also a gesture to the Icelandic horse, a horse that is so versatile that it can be used by young and old alike for riding in nature, long distance riding and professional arena riding.
Because the World Championships 2015 is organized in cooperation between all of the Nordic countries, relay teams from Denmark and Norway will start their rides simultaneously from the ferry crossings in the two countries, which means that in Denmark the teams will ride towards Herning, from every corner of the world.
All the relay riders will arrive in Herning just in time for the official opening of the World Championships 2015 on Wednesday August 5, 2015.
