A group of horsemen in Iceland has built a monument at Hvanneyri in Iceland with the support of FEIF to honor the memory of Gunnar Bjarnason, (1915-1998). Gunnar was one of the most important persons in the history of the Icelandic horse in the 20th century. He was the chief horse breeding consultant for Iceland in the years 1940-1961, and a key person in promoting the Icelandic horse in Europe and North-America. Gunnar was also one of the founders of the Icelandic Equestrian Association and later FEIF.
The monument is made out of stainless steel and rock, and forms the profile of a horse´s head on a foundation of rocks. The artist is Bjarni Þór Bjarnason, and the foundation was made by Unnsteinn Elíasson.
